Thinh Pham, a high school senior from Texas, was accepted into all eight Ivy League universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Cornell, but chose to turn them all down.

Instead, the George Bush High School student decided to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), drawn by a full scholarship worth $2.8 million, ABC 123 reported.
MIT is currently ranked the best university in the world according to QS World University Rankings 2025.
After careful consideration of financial factors, Thinh plans to pursue studies in Computer Science and Engineering at MIT.
"I want to attribute my success not only to myself but to other people around me," he said.
His parents, Thuan Pham and Thu Tran, expressed immense pride in their son's achievement.
Teachers at George Bush High School noted Thinh's standout curiosity as a defining trait.
"He comes by the ideas easily, but he always asks more questions, asks more questions, asks more questions," teacher Rebecca Darling said, KHOU 11 reported.
"MIT has a very quirky community that I love," Thinh said, explaining his decision. "It's full of problem solvers, collaborators, and people eager to work together to tackle tomorrow's challenges."

Violent storms have battered the central-eastern United States, leaving at least 16 people dead, officials confirmed. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings of “severe” flash flooding in the coming days, as the storms continue to pose serious threats to life and property.
A powerful line of storms, stretching from Arkansas to Ohio, has swept through the region in recent days. These storms have damaged homes, flooded roads, knocked out power, and triggered dozens of tornadoes.
The worst impact was felt in Tennessee, where 10 people have died in the western part of the state. Authorities there are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
In Kentucky, two people were killed due to flooding. One of the victims was a child who was swept away by floodwaters, according to Governor Andy Beshear. He described the flooding as record-breaking in some communities and urged residents to stay off the roads.
“Flooding has reached record levels in many communities,” Beshear wrote on social media.
“Avoid travel, and never drive through water.”
Other states also reported storm-related fatalities. Missouri recorded two deaths, while Indiana reported one. In Little Rock, Arkansas, a five-year-old child was found dead in a home affected by the storm.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed the storm’s devastating effects. Entire neighborhoods were left in ruins, with homes destroyed, trees uprooted, power lines downed, and vehicles overturned.
The NWS has issued a serious warning, stating:
“Severe, widespread flash flooding is expected.”
“Lives and property are in great danger.”
As of early Sunday, more than 100,000 customers were without power across Arkansas and Tennessee, according to PowerOutage.us, a website that tracks outages across the U.S.
As of Friday, measles cases across the United States surpassed 700, marking a concerning rise as the virus continues to spread, particularly among unvaccinated populations. This surge came during a week when Indiana joined five other states battling active outbreaks, Texas added 60 more cases, and the country recorded its third measles-related death.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday that the nationwide outbreak seemed to be leveling off. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) redeployed a team to West Texas, highlighting the ongoing risk, especially for those who remain unvaccinated. The country has now reported more than twice as many measles cases as it did throughout all of 2024, with Texas bearing the brunt, tallying 541 cases.

Measles is an extremely contagious airborne virus that spreads when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Despite being preventable through vaccination, the disease has made a worrying comeback even though it was officially declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000.

Vào lúc 2:00PM, một nhóm người thuộc Cộng Đồng và Thiện nguyện viên đă đi dọc đường Bellaire để thay hết những lá cờ đă bị một kẻ lạ mặt trùm phủ mặt mày kín mít làm hư hại vào tối ngày 13 tháng 4.
Tổng cộng số cờ được thay là 21 lá. Kẻ lạ mặt đă dùng kéo cắt ngang lằn sọc ở giữa và xé rách phần dưới của 20 lá cờ. Một lá cờ duy nhất chỉ bị cắt một ṿng tṛn ở chính giữa. Đặc biệt là không một lá cờ Mỹ nào bị chạm đến. Kẻ lạ mặt chỉ tập trung vô cờ Việt Nam Cộng Ḥa mà thôi.

Hanoi police have arrested the suspect involved in a robbery at a VietinBank branch in Chuong My District, Hanoi.
According to the Hanoi Police, in the early hours of April 23, officers from the municipal police department, in coordination with the Criminal Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, successfully arrested the suspect in the robbery that occurred at the Phu My transaction office of VietinBank’s Thanh An branch in Phu Nghia commune, Chuong My District, on April 21.

Following more than 38 hours of investigation and pursuit, Vu Van Lich, a 40-year-old resident of Nam Hai commune, Nam Truc District, Nam Dinh Province, was apprehended by the Criminal Police Division, Forensic Department, and other specialist units under the Hanoi Police, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Security’s Criminal Police Department.
Prior to the arrest, around 1:30 p.m. on April 21, Lich entered the VietinBank transaction office, brandishing a knife and threatening staff members.
A female employee, fearing for her safety, quickly opened a drawer and placed all the cash it contained into Lich’s backpack.
After collecting the money, Vu Van Lich walked out of the bank, continuing to threaten people around him with the knife before fleeing on a motorbike in the direction of National Highway 6.

Van Hanh Mall in Ho Chi Minh City has taken urgent safety measures by installing protective netting across its central atrium and increasing the height of its glass railings following a series of fatal incidents involving individuals jumping from upper levels.
The move comes after three tragic falls within less than two months, the most recent occurring on April 26, when a 22-year-old man jumped from the seventh floor to the ground-level atrium. Surveillance footage confirmed the incident, and the victim, originally from Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province, died at the scene.

The United Airlines plans to add daily flights to Vietnam and Thailand in October, further expanding the network for the U.S.-based carrier that already has the most Asia service, reported CNBC.
In the expansion, its airplanes from Los Angeles and San Francisco that are headed for Hong Kong will then go on to the two new destinations: Thailand’s Bangkok and Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, with service set to begin on Oct. 26.
On Oct. 25, United Airlines plans to add a second daily nonstop flight from San Francisco to Manila, the Philippines, and on Dec. 11, it will launch nonstops from San Francisco to Adelaide, Australia, which will operate three days a week.
The news site noted that the carrier has been adding far-flung destinations not served by rivals to its routes, like Nuuk, Greenland, and Bilbao, Spain, which will start later this year. Getting the mix right is especially important as carriers seek to grow their lucrative loyalty programs and need attractive destinations to keep customers spending.

Dozens of workers at a company in Ba Ria - Vung Tau were hospitalized after experiencing symptoms of fatigue and shortness of breath, suspected to be caused by gas inhalation. One worker has died as a result.

On the morning of April 13, the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Provincial Industrial Zones Authority confirmed that following a workplace incident involving a gas leak at Zinc Oxide Corporation Vietnam Co., Ltd. (located in Phu My 3 Industrial Zone, Phu My City), employee T.V.D. died, and several others were affected.
Initial reports indicate that at around 9:55 a.m. on April 12, a gas leak occurred in the AOZ department of Zinc Oxide Corporation Vietnam.
The leak caused many workers to suffer symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty breathing, headaches, and excessive sweating.
All affected workers were immediately transported to Ba Ria Hospital for emergency treatment and underwent medical testing.
As of 5:00 p.m. the same day, the hospital reported that 40 individuals had been discharged, while one patient remained under observation due to close exposure to the gas.
The case is currently under investigation by the Criminal Police Department of the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Provincial Police to determine the cause of the incident.
Zinc Oxide Corporation Vietnam is known for handling and disposing of hazardous waste and for treating and recycling steel furnace dust to produce zinc oxide, which can replace zinc concentrate.

A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood Thursday morning, killing everyone on board and causing widespread destruction. The Cessna 550 went down around 3:45 a.m. near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, destroying a home and setting over a dozen cars on fire. Here's what we know so far:
Fatalities and Injuries: Six people were aboard the plane, and unfortunately, all of them lost their lives. One of the victims was identified as Dave Shapiro, a music agent and founder of Sound Talent Group. Two other staff members from the company were also on the plane.
Destruction and Response: The crash damaged at least 10 houses, and vehicles on both sides of the street went up in flames. San Diego Fire Department Assistant Chief Dan Eddy reported one house was badly damaged, but miraculously, no one on the ground was seriously hurt. The fire department and other emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene.
Cause of the Crash: The cause is still under investigation, but it's believed the plane clipped a nearby power line before going down in thick fog. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will likely investigate the incident.
