Sư tử biển ở Chukotka bị tàn sát dã man bởi bàn tay con người
 

Không ai có thể chắc chắn rằng hiện nay vẫn còn nhiều Sư tử biển đang sinh sống ngoài tự nhiên và số lượng loài này còn bao nhiêu cá thể trên toàn thế giới, chỉ biết rằng hàng ngày Sư tử biển ở khu tự trị Chukotka, Viễn Đông Nga vẫn bị giết hại rất dã man để lấy thịt làm thực phẩm.

Những thống kê về số lượng Sư tử biển được cập nhật năm 1990 tại Nga nay đã lỗi thời, số lượng của loài Sư tử biển sinh sống quanh khu vực Chukchi thuộc Chukotka đã giảm xuống mức báo động do sự tận diệt của ngư dân địa phương.

Bất chấp lệnh cấm săn bắt Sư tử biển có từ năm 1956 do nhà chức trách Liên Xô cũ ban hành, người ta vẫn cứ ngang nhiên giết thịt Sư tử biển, tàn phá môi trường và đa dạnh sinh thái.
