Các nhà khoa học hiện đang bận rộn trong quá trình tìm ra vaccine chống virus corona. Thông thường, công việc này mất đến hàng năm trời. Tuy nhiên, thời gian sẽ được rút ngắn xuống còn khoảng 2 tuần.

Các nhà khoa học hiện tại vẫn đang gấp rút đi tìm vaccine cho virus corona 2019-nCov gây dịch viêm phổi khiến cả thế giới lo sợ, khi hơn 24.000 người nhiễm bệnh và gần 500 người tử vong. Và mới đây, giới chuyên gia từ Anh Quốc đã đưa ra thông báo về một đột phá cực kỳ đáng mừng: rút ngắn thành công thời gian phát triển một công đoạn trong điều chế vaccine, từ 2 - 3 năm xuống chỉ còn vỏn vẹn 14 ngày.

Cụ thể theo giáo sư Robin Shattock - chuyên gia hàng đầu về miễn dịch và nhiễm trùng tại ĐH Imperial College London (Anh), nhóm nghiên cứu của ông sẽ có thể bắt đầu công đoạn thử nghiệm vaccine trên động vật ngay từ tuần tới, đồng thời hy vọng nghiên cứu trên người sẽ xuất hiện trong hè này.

"Các phương pháp tiếp cận truyền thống phải mất từ 2 - 3 năm trước khi đưa ra thị trường. Còn chúng tôi có thể tạo ra đối tượng chế tạo vaccine tiềm năng trong phòng thí nghiệm chỉ sau 14 ngày." - Shattock chia sẻ.

"Đầu tuần tới chúng tôi sẽ thực hiện trên các loài vật - đây thực sự là con đường rất ngắn. Bước tiếp theo, chúng ta sẽ đi từ thí nghiệm ở động vật sang nghiên cứu trên con người."

"Tôi tin rằng với nguồn kinh phí hỗ trợ phù hợp, chúng tôi sẽ thành công chỉ sau vài tháng nữa thôi."

Hiện tại, chính phủ Anh đang hoàn tất chuyến bay cuối cùng, đưa công dân quay trở lại từ vùng dịch Vũ Hán. Lúc này vẫn còn 165 người Anh ở tỉnh Hồ Bắc, trong đó 108 người đang yêu cầu được hỗ trợ trở về nước. Tính đến nay, đã có 94 công dân Anh được chính phủ đưa về kể từ khi dịch bệnh nổ ra.

"Với đột phá này, ngay cả khi virus trở thành dịch bệnh lan ra toàn cầu thì mọi chuyện cũng không quá muộn. Chúng ta hiện vẫn chưa biết nhiều về dịch bệnh này, nhưng nhiều khả năng nó sẽ bị đẩy lui khi mùa hè đến, giống như các dịch bệnh khác."

"Có thể sẽ có đợt trỗi dậy thứ 2, và lúc đó vaccine sẽ trở nên cực kỳ quan trọng."

China lab seeks patent on use of Gilead's coronavirus treatment

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - A state-run Chinese research institute has applied for a patent on the use of Gilead Sciences’ experimental U.S. antiviral drug, which scientists think could provide treatment for the coronavirus that has killed hundreds and infected thousands.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology of the China Academy of Sciences, based in the city where the outbreak is believed to have originated, said in a statement on Tuesday it applied to patent the use of Remdesivir, an antiviral drug developed by Gilead (GILD.O), to treat the virus.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week reported a coronavirus patient in the United States was found to show an improvement after taking Remdesivir, which is also used to treat infectious diseases such as Ebola.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
“Even if the Wuhan Institute’s application gets authorized, the role is very limited because Gilead still owns the fundamental patent of the drug,” said Zhao Youbin, a Shanghai-based intellectual property counsel at Purplevine IP Service Co.

“Any exploitation of the patent must seek approval from Gilead.”

Gilead did not immediately respond to request for comment but last week said it was working with China to test Remdesivir for use in a small number of patients with the coronavirus.

The application was submitted jointly with the Military Medicine Institute of the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Military Science, according to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Scientists from both institutes said in a paper published in Nature’s Cell Research on Tuesday that they found both Remdesivir and Chloroquine, which is used to treat malaria, to be an effective way to inhibit the coronavirus.

The Wuhan-based laboratory said in its statement that the patent application was filed on Jan. 21 and aimed at protecting China’s national interests. However, it said it would temporarily drop its patent claims if the opportunity arose to collaborate with foreign pharmaceutical firms to fight the epidemic.
